Perak covers an area of 21,000 square km and has a population of about two million. For centuries, Perak was renowned for its rich tin deposits. It is believed that the state derived its name, which means silver in Malay, from the silvery tin ore. The discovery brought about an influx of Chinese immigrants to Perak. Today, Perak has developed into a harmonious multi-racial society characterized by diversity in language, culture and heritage. Its capital, Ipoh, is known as the city of millionaires, pioneers of the tin industry that made Malaysia the world's number one exporter of tin. Ipoh is named after the Ipoh tree whose poisonous latex was used by the early aborigines for their blowpipe darts. |
